Language engineering, model-driven engineering & product lines

Model the domain. Generate the software. Evolve it with confidence.

Third Rail Software helps teams make complex software easier to design and change through domain-specific languages, DSL-mediated Agents, model-driven engineering, and software product lines.

Where Third Rail Software can help

Deep experience in domain-specific languages (DSLs), model-driven engineering, and product lines—helping software adapt, scale, and serve diverse needs.

DSL-mediated Agents

Bring AI agents into engineering workflows through a domain-specific language (DSL) they read and write, so their work can be validated, reviewed by experts, and processed deterministically. This is a pattern Third Rail Software has defined and published: read the definition or visit dslmediatedagents.com.

Model-driven engineering & DSLs

Turn domain knowledge into precise, useful models and languages. Experience includes Eclipse EMF and Xtext, as well as Langium and language-server tooling.

Software product lines

Find the right balance between shared platforms and meaningful product variation. Shape architectures, variability models, and engineering practices that make reuse work in practice.

Related experience

API & SDK platforms. Design and generation of RESTful APIs and SDKs for external developers, including SDK and API platforms at HP and Samsung.

AI-assisted engineering. Help teams adapt their software development lifecycle to AI coding tools: identify where they add value, update development and review workflows, and maintain quality with appropriate testing, security checks, and clear human ownership.

Ways to work together

Good work starts with a conversation. Sometimes you need focused consulting, sometimes a partner for a joint project, and sometimes it helps to talk a software challenge through with someone who has seen a few. Third Rail Software is open to all three, and happy to discuss any software topic.

Advisory

One-off or ongoing sessions with your architects and leads on a design, a strategy, or a decision.

Architecture & design reviews

A focused, independent look at a system, an API, or a modeling approach, with clear findings and recommendations.

Prototype or proof of concept

A small working demonstration, such as a DSL with validation and generators, to test an idea before committing to it.

About Steve Livengood

Steve is a software architect and language engineer with over four decades of experience building and evolving software platforms at companies like HP, Samsung, and Xerox. That work includes SDK and API platforms and globally distributed engineering teams of more than 400 people. He works at the intersection of product line engineering, model-driven engineering, and domain-specific languages.

A long-time contributor to the Software Product Line Conference (SPLC) community and an advocate for remote-first, documentation-driven engineering, Steve helps teams connect rigorous structural design with the languages, models, and tools that keep complex systems consistent.
